Sell a Coin Collection from Anywhere in Illinois

Most of the coin collections we evaluate come from the Chicago area, but we also hear regularly from people throughout Illinois who do not have a dedicated coin shop nearby.

In many parts of the state, especially smaller towns and rural areas, the local options may be limited. There may be a jewelry store, pawn shop, or gold buyer nearby, but not always a business that focuses specifically on coins, paper money, bullion, and inherited collections.

Because of that, it is not unusual for people outside the immediate Chicago area to contact us about selling a collection.

Working with Collections from Outside the Chicago Area

If you are within driving distance of our shop in Skokie, we usually recommend bringing the collection in when possible. In-person evaluation is often the safest and most straightforward way for us to review everything properly.

That said, we understand that not everyone is located near a coin shop, and not everyone wants to spend hours driving around Illinois trying to find the right buyer.

For larger or more valuable collections, some customers choose to work with us by mail. After an initial conversation, we can explain whether shipping makes sense, what types of items are worth sending, and how to handle the process as safely as possible.

When Mailing a Collection Makes Sense

Mailing a coin collection is not always the best option. In general, it makes the most sense when the collection contains better material, precious metals, or enough value to justify the cost and effort of shipping and insurance.

For smaller or more common groups of coins, mailing may not be practical. A quick conversation beforehand can usually help determine whether bringing the collection in, shipping it, or taking another approach makes the most sense.

Why People Contact Chicago Coin Dealers Like Us

We often hear from people across Illinois who are dealing with inherited collections, old family accumulations, or groups of gold and silver coins that need a more specialized evaluation than a typical jewelry or pawn transaction.

In many cases, the issue is not that there are no buyers at all — it is that there may not be a nearby buyer who really understands collector coins, paper currency, bullion, or the difference between numismatic value and metal value.

That is one reason some people choose to work with an established Chicago-area coin dealer, even if they are located outside the immediate area. We have had customers drive in from several hours away, and others who preferred to handle the process by mail after speaking with us first.

A Note on Getting Multiple Offers

People are often told to get multiple offers before selling a coin collection, and that can make sense in some situations. But in practice, the bigger issue is usually not geography. It is whether the buyer understands what they are looking at.

For many ordinary collections, pricing between established dealers may be fairly similar. The bigger difference is whether someone recognizes collector value, bullion value, or simply treats everything as generic old coins.

Start with a Conversation

If you are located outside the Chicago area and are not sure what to do with a coin collection, feel free to contact us first. In many cases, a short conversation can help determine whether it makes sense to bring the collection in, mail it to us for review, or handle it another way.
