Oakton Coins & Collectibles is a full-service coin dealer located in Skokie and serving customers throughout Niles. We buy individual coins, complete collections, paper currency, gold and silver bullion, certified coins, proof and mint sets, and mixed numismatic accumulations.
Some customers have collected for decades and know exactly what they own. Others inherited albums, boxes, envelopes, or safe-deposit-box contents and need help identifying what is important. Both situations are common. You do not need to grade, research, or reorganize the collection before visiting.
Free verbal evaluations are available with no obligation to sell. Walk-ins are welcome seven days a week, and free parking is located directly outside our shop. Our Niles coin and gold buyer hub provides an overview of the other valuables we purchase.

Coins and Currency We Buy
We buy individual coins, partial collections, inherited estates, and substantial multi-generation collections. Material we regularly evaluate includes:
- United States type coins
- Morgan and Peace silver dollars
- Pre-1965 U.S. silver coinage
- U.S. and foreign gold coins
- Lincoln cents, Indian Head cents, and other collected series
- Proof sets, mint sets, and commemorative coins
- PCGS- and NGC-certified coins
- Foreign and world coin collections
- Tokens, medals, and other numismatic items
- United States and world paper currency
- Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion
Not every old coin is rare, and not every collection is valuable for the same reason. Some groups contain scarce dates or high-grade coins. Others derive most of their value from gold or silver content. Many contain a combination of collectible coins, bullion, common material, and sentimental pieces.
Selling an Inherited Coin Collection
Many inherited collections arrive in their original albums, rolls, cigar boxes, envelopes, plastic holders, or bank bags. Keep the collection together when practical and include old labels, receipts, certificates, and collector notes. Those materials can provide useful context about how the collection was assembled.
Please do not clean or polish the coins. Cleaning can permanently alter original surfaces and reduce collector value. Even light wiping can leave scratches that are noticeable to experienced collectors.
You do not need to create a spreadsheet or identify every date first. During the evaluation, we separate common material from pieces that deserve additional attention. Larger collections can be reviewed in a private room with enough space to work through the group systematically.
How Coin Values Are Determined
A coin’s value may come from precious-metal content, date, mint mark, condition, originality, rarity, collector demand, certification, or a combination of those factors. Two coins with the same denomination and metal content can have very different markets.
For collectible coins, we consider current wholesale information, relevant auction activity, and real dealer demand. For bullion and common gold or silver coins, the live metals market and product liquidity play a larger role.
An unsold online listing does not establish what a coin is worth. Internet prices may assume a grade the actual coin does not meet, overlook cleaning or damage, or represent a retail asking price rather than an immediate purchase price. We explain the applicable market and why an item is being valued the way it is.
Numismatic Expertise and Professional Credentials
Oakton Coins is built around numismatic evaluation rather than treating every coin as metal. The owner is a life member of the American Numismatic Association and a member of Roundtable Trading. Oakton Coins is also a PCGS, NGC, and PMG Authorized Dealer.
These affiliations do not replace careful evaluation, but they reflect regular participation in the professional coin market. Our experience includes ordinary accumulations, advanced collections, certified coins, world material, paper money, and precious-metal bullion.
Certified Coins and Professional Grading
Professional grading can be useful when a coin is genuine, sufficiently valuable, and likely to benefit from independent authentication or certification. It does not make financial sense to grade every old coin.
We can help determine whether a coin is a reasonable grading candidate. Already-certified collections are evaluated according to the assigned grade, current demand, eye appeal, originality, and comparable transactions. Two coins with the same numerical grade do not always sell for exactly the same amount.
World Coins and Paper Currency
We evaluate U.S. and world paper money, foreign coins, international gold and silver, and mixed collections assembled through travel, military service, immigration, or family history. Modern base-metal foreign coins often have modest resale value, but older groups can contain silver, gold, scarce types, or collectible banknotes.
Do not discard unfamiliar coins or notes simply because they are foreign or written in another language. Bring the material in as a group, and we can identify pieces that deserve additional attention.
Gold, Silver, and Precious-Metal Bullion
Oakton Coins buys recognized gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion. This includes government-issued coins, privately minted bars and rounds, older gold coins, and common forms of investment silver.
Bullion prices can change throughout the day. Offers depend on the live market, authenticity, product, quantity, and current wholesale demand. Coin expertise remains important because certain older or better-date pieces may deserve a collector premium rather than being treated only as bullion.
Our Niles silver buyer provides additional information about silver coins, bars, rounds, sterling, and household silver.
Complete Collections and Mixed Estates
A complete estate may include coins, bullion, paper currency, jewelry, watches, medals, sterling silver, and miscellaneous valuables. We can evaluate those categories together rather than requiring the family to locate a separate buyer for each part.
If gold jewelry, dental gold, or other precious-metal items are mixed with the collection, our cash-for-gold service near Niles can review them during the same visit. Keeping related material together often makes the process simpler and reduces the chance that something important is overlooked.
