Maybe.
This is one of the most common questions we receive, but it is surprisingly difficult to answer without knowing exactly which coin you have.
The reason is simple: many people use the term “silver dollar” to describe any large silver-colored dollar coin. Some of those coins contain silver. Some do not.
Which U.S. Dollar Coins Contain Silver?
Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)
Morgan dollars contain 90% silver and are among the most popular coins in American numismatics.
Peace Dollars (1921-1935)
Peace dollars also contain 90% silver and are another classic U.S. silver dollar.
Eisenhower Dollars (1971-1978)
This is where things become more complicated.
Most Eisenhower dollars found in circulation contain no silver at all.
However, certain collector versions were produced with 40% silver. Determining which version you have requires a closer look.
Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea & Presidential Dollars
These coins do not contain silver, even though some people refer to them as silver dollars.
A coin being silver in color does not mean it is made of silver.
Why We Ask So Many Questions
When someone calls and asks, “Is my silver dollar real silver?” we often have to ask several follow-up questions.
Many customers describe Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Eisenhower dollars, Susan B. Anthony dollars, and Sacagawea dollars in very similar ways over the phone.
We are usually trying to determine exactly which coin is being described before we can answer whether it contains silver.
What About Counterfeits?
Unfortunately, counterfeit silver dollars are common today.
If you purchased a Morgan dollar or Peace dollar online for a price that seemed far too good to be true, there is reason to be cautious.
We regularly see counterfeit examples purchased from overseas marketplaces, online auctions, social media sellers, flea markets, and other sources where authenticity was never verified.
A genuine silver dollar contains a significant amount of silver. If someone is selling one for a fraction of its silver value, there is usually a reason.
If you bought a “Morgan dollar” on Temu for a few dollars, there is a very good chance it is not genuine.
The Bottom Line
Morgan dollars and Peace dollars contain 90% silver.
Some Eisenhower dollars contain 40% silver, while most do not.
Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, Presidential, and most other modern dollar coins contain no silver.
And if the deal seemed too good to be true, especially online, it may be worth having the coin checked before assuming it is genuine silver.
