Selling Coins, Gold, and Jewelry from Outside Chicago

Most of the people we work with visit us in person. But not everyone has a reliable coin shop nearby — and not every local buyer is equipped to handle larger or more complex collections.

Over the years, we’ve helped customers from across the Midwest — and occasionally much farther away — evaluate and sell coins, gold, silver, and estate items in a clear, straightforward way.

This page explains how that works, when it makes sense, and what to expect.

Where Our Out-of-Area Customers Come From

We regularly see customers from nearby states who prefer working with a dedicated coin shop rather than a general gold buyer or pawn shop.

We regularly see customers from nearby states, as well as more remote locations where access to a qualified coin shop is limited.

In many cases, they’re already coming into the Chicago area — or they want to work with a shop that handles both bullion and collector coins under one roof.

If you’re within driving distance, visiting in person is almost always the safest and most straightforward option.

Why Some Customers Travel In Instead of Selling Locally

In many smaller towns, there may be a local buyer — but that doesn’t always mean they’re equipped to handle larger or more complex collections.

We regularly work with customers who choose to come into the Chicago area because of the depth of the market here.

  • Larger collections that need to be evaluated as a whole
  • Mixed items (coins, bullion, jewelry, paper money)
  • Higher-value material that requires accurate pricing and liquidity

Chicago has one of the most active gold and coin markets in the country. That matters when it comes to pricing, especially on larger transactions.

In practical terms, we’re able to buy and move large amounts of material efficiently — something that simply isn’t possible in many smaller markets.

This isn’t about replacing local businesses. For smaller, straightforward items, a local shop may be perfectly fine.

But for larger collections or situations where accuracy really matters, customers often prefer to work with a shop connected to a stronger market.

When There’s No Local Shop at All

In some cases, customers simply don’t have access to a qualified coin shop.

We’ve heard from people in remote areas — including parts of Alaska and rural regions — where there are no local options for properly evaluating coins, gold, or estate items.

These situations are very different from someone choosing between multiple shops. Sometimes there isn’t a choice at all.

In those cases, we start with a conversation to understand what’s there and help determine the safest next step.

Mail-In Evaluations (Case-by-Case Only)

We have occasionally handled collections through the mail, but only after discussing the details first.

  • Items are clearly described ahead of time
  • Shipping is typically insured and trackable
  • Everything is evaluated once received and explained clearly

We do not operate as a bulk mail-in buyer and do not encourage sending valuables without speaking with us first.

Shipping is simply a practical solution in situations where there is no better local option.

Most out-of-area situations start with a simple email so we can understand what you have.

We would never recommend sending a high-value collection through the mail without a plan. In many cases, larger collections are better handled in person.

Mail-in situations tend to work best for smaller, clearly defined groups of items where expectations are clear and risk is limited.

Shipping valuables is something dealers handle regularly, but it needs to be done correctly — which is why we guide customers through it when necessary.

Secure Options for Higher-Value Collections

For larger or higher-value collections, there are established ways to move material safely — including fully insured shipping and, in some cases, professional armored transport.

We have access to networks that handle valuables across the United States, Canada, and internationally when needed. These situations are uncommon and are only used when appropriate for the size and nature of the collection.

Most situations do not require anything that complex. The right approach depends on what you have, the value involved, and your location.

That’s why we always start with a conversation first — to determine the safest and most practical way to proceed.

What We Do When Evaluating Collections

Whether items come in person or remotely, the process is the same:

  • Separate bullion from collector coins
  • Test gold and silver for purity and authenticity
  • Identify items with value beyond melt
  • Explain everything clearly before any offer is made

Many collections include a mix of items. You can learn more here:

Our Recommendation

If you’re within driving distance of Chicago, visiting in person is almost always the best option.

If you’re farther away and unsure what to do, reaching out first is the right place to start. We can help you decide whether shipping makes sense or if there’s a better option closer to you.

Our goal is not to push you into a transaction — it’s to make sure you understand what you have and what your options are.
