Stamp collecting was an extremely popular hobby for many decades, and we regularly see collections that were assembled carefully over a lifetime. However, many people also have unrealistic expectations about value due to television programs, news stories about rare stamps, or famous examples like the “Inverted Jenny” upside-down airplane stamp.

While genuinely rare stamps can still be worth substantial amounts of money, the overwhelming majority of collections we evaluate today consist of common material assembled as a hobby. The collector base has aged dramatically over the last several decades, and demand for many ordinary stamp collections has declined significantly.

What Types of Stamp Collections Still Have Value?

Some areas of the stamp market remain strong, particularly:

  • Rare early U.S. stamps
  • Pre-Civil War material
  • Better worldwide albums assembled decades ago
  • Certain Chinese stamps with strong international demand
  • Better postal history and historical envelopes
  • Collections with old dealer invoices or auction records
  • Higher-end specialized collections assembled by serious hobbyists

That said, these types of collections are relatively uncommon. Most collections we see today are modest hobby collections with primarily common material.

Four Common Categories of Stamp Collections

Well Put-Together Stamp Albums

Older albums that were carefully assembled and stored properly are usually the most desirable type of collection. Large worldwide albums with early issues, complete sets, and organized presentation are generally worth more than loose stamps in boxes or bags.

Condition and storage matter tremendously. Albums that are free from mildew, water damage, heavy odor, insect damage, or stuck pages are much easier to sell and evaluate.

Poundage

If you have a large box or bag of loose canceled stamps, collectors refer to this as “poundage.” These mixtures were commonly sold by the pound for collectors to search through and sort into albums.

Unfortunately, this type of material is generally very common today and has limited value. Most modern collectors no longer want to spend time sorting through massive quantities of unsorted stamps.

Unused Postage

We do buy older unused U.S. postage stamps. However, many collections are realistically worth less than face value because modern shipping systems have dramatically reduced demand for physical stamps.

In many cases, older unused postage is purchased primarily for postage use rather than collector value. Large quantities of low denomination stamps can be difficult and time-consuming to use in today’s automated shipping environment, which affects resale value.

Higher denomination postage generally sells for a higher percentage of face value than older low-denomination stamps. Most older postage trades at a discount to face value depending on denomination, condition, and ease of use.

Unfortunately, counterfeit postage stamps have become increasingly common online in recent years, particularly through social media marketplaces and unauthorized internet sellers. We do not purchase suspected counterfeit or replica postage.

First Day Covers

First Day Covers were extremely popular collectibles for many years. These are envelopes canceled on the official first day a stamp was issued.

Although a few early examples can be valuable, most First Day Covers are extremely common today and have limited resale value.

Condition Matters Tremendously

The condition of a stamp collection can dramatically affect value. Stamp collections stored in damp basements, attics, garages, or humid environments often develop mildew, foxing, water damage, odor, discoloration, or stuck pages.

Even tiny tears, creases, stains, missing perforations, or hinge damage can reduce the value of individual stamps significantly.

If stamps are attached to old envelopes or historical covers, do not remove them. In many cases, the envelope itself is part of the collectible value.

Stamp Collections Often Come With Other Collectibles

We frequently evaluate stamp collections as part of larger estate and collectible groups that may also include coin collections, paper money, historical documents, postcards, militaria, watches, sterling silver, jewelry, or other vintage collectibles.

Even when the stamps themselves are modest in value, we are often able to help people sort through mixed estate collections and point them in the right direction.

How the Market Works Today

Many common stamp collections ultimately trade through secondary collectible markets, hobby resellers, antique malls, flea markets, and smaller collectors rather than major auction houses.

This surprises many people, but it reflects the reality of the modern stamp market. Catalog prices and old appraisals often do not reflect real-world selling prices today.

We try to provide realistic, straightforward information so people can make informed decisions without pressure.
