Sell World Coins and Foreign Coin Collections

World coins — often called foreign coins — come in many different forms and values. Some are primarily worth their gold or silver content, while others carry collectible value because of rarity, condition, age, historical significance, or collector demand.

At Oakton Coins & Collectibles, we buy world coin collections every day, from common foreign coins brought back from travel to rare gold coins, silver crowns, shipwreck coins, and inherited collections built over generations.

Many people are surprised to learn that foreign coins can contain significant silver or gold value. Others discover that older world coins may have collector value far beyond metal content.

We Buy All Types of World Coins

We actively purchase many types of foreign coins and world coin collections, including:

  • Foreign gold coins
  • Foreign silver coins
  • Ancient and medieval coins
  • European coins
  • Mexican gold and silver coins
  • Foreign proof sets and mint sets
  • Bulk foreign coin accumulations
  • Shipwreck and treasure coins
  • Certified world coins graded by PCGS or NGC

We also buy broader coin collections containing both U.S. and foreign coins.

Foreign Gold Coins

Many foreign gold coins trade actively worldwide and are highly liquid. Some are valued primarily for their gold content, while others may carry additional collector premiums.

Examples include:

  • British Sovereigns
  • Swiss 20 Francs
  • French 20 Francs
  • Mexican Peso gold coins
  • South African Krugerrands
  • Canadian Gold Maple Leafs
  • Chinese Gold Pandas

Most foreign gold coins move closely with the spot price of gold, though rarer dates and better condition coins may carry additional numismatic value.

Foreign Silver Coins

Silver coinage was once common throughout the world. Many countries produced coins in .900 silver, .800 silver, sterling silver, and other silver alloys.

Some foreign silver coins are primarily bullion-related, while others may have stronger collector demand depending on age, country, rarity, and condition.

You can learn more about silver purity and silver content on our page about different types of silver.

Ancient and Medieval Coins

Ancient and medieval coins span thousands of years of history and include Roman, Byzantine, Greek, Chinese, Islamic, and European issues.

These coins may be made from gold, silver, bronze, or copper. Age alone does not determine value. Some ancient coins are relatively common, while others are extremely rare and valuable.

Proper identification matters because many buyers are unfamiliar with ancient and medieval material.

Bulk Foreign Coins and Base Metal Coins

Many customers bring in jars, bags, boxes, or albums filled with foreign coins collected during travel or inherited from relatives. Most of these coins are base metal issues from around the world.

Even when individual coins are not rare, bulk foreign coins can still carry resale value. We currently buy common foreign coin accumulations by weight.

  • Current bulk foreign coin rate: approximately $3 per pound

However, some collections contain silver coins, better dates, older material, or collectible pieces mixed into common accumulations. This is why experience matters when sorting world coins.

Most World Coin Collections Are Mixed

Many foreign coin collections are a mixture of common travel souvenirs, silver coins, bullion, paper money, medals, tokens, and collectible material from different countries and eras.

One box may contain common modern coins alongside older silver crowns or gold coins worth substantially more. We regularly separate bullion-related material from collectible coins and explain the differences clearly.

We also buy world paper currency and mixed foreign currency collections.

Certified World Coins

Many foreign coins are graded and authenticated by PCGS and NGC. Certified coins can carry stronger market value because authenticity and condition have already been professionally verified.

Certain rare world coins can be difficult for inexperienced buyers to evaluate properly, which is one reason many collectors prefer working with experienced coin dealers.

Do Not Clean Foreign Coins

Do not clean world coins before bringing them in. Cleaning coins WILL permanently destroy collector value on many coins, especially older or rarer pieces.

Leave coins exactly as they were found, including coins stored in albums, holders, flips, envelopes, or original packaging.

Inherited Foreign Coin Collections

Many world coin collections come from estates or inherited collections built over decades. Sometimes these collections were assembled by serious collectors, while others were simply accumulated through travel, military service, or family history.

If you inherited foreign coins and are unsure where to start, we can help identify silver, gold, bullion, and collectible pieces within the collection.
