People often inherit old paper money, discover it in a safe deposit box, or find it tucked away in a collection and wonder where they should take it.
The answer depends on what you have. Some old notes are common and worth only face value. Others can have significant collector value based on rarity, condition, signatures, serial numbers, issuing banks, and demand from collectors.
This is why many collectors and families choose to work with a coin and currency dealer rather than simply depositing old notes at a bank.
Not All Paper Money Is the Same
Paper money comes in many forms, including modern currency, Silver Certificates, United States Notes, National Bank Notes, large-size currency, star notes, military payment certificates, obsolete bank notes, and foreign paper money.
Some notes are collected primarily for their history, while others are valued because relatively few examples survive today.
Why Not Just Take It to the Bank?
Banks are excellent at handling money. However, banks generally exchange currency at face value and do not evaluate collector value.
For example, a large-size note with a face value of $10 may be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars to collectors. If it is deposited at a bank, that collector value is usually lost forever.
For that reason, it is often worth having older paper money evaluated before spending it or depositing it.
Please Do Not Clean or Repair Old Notes
One of the most common mistakes people make is attempting to improve the appearance of old currency.
Do not wash, iron, tape, laminate, trim, press, or otherwise alter old paper money. Collectors generally prefer original notes, even when they show normal wear from circulation.
Attempts to clean or repair a note can reduce its collector value.
Inherited Currency Collections
Many of the paper money collections we see arrive as part of larger estates. A box may contain old currency, coins, silver certificates, foreign money, gold coins, bullion, jewelry, and other collectibles all mixed together.
In these situations, working with a buyer who can evaluate everything together often saves time and helps prevent valuable items from being overlooked.
