A coin shop is a specialized business that buys, sells, and evaluates coins, paper money, gold, silver, bullion, jewelry, and other valuables often found in collections and estates.
Most people do not visit a coin shop because they are serious collectors. More often, they come in because they inherited something, found something in a safe deposit box, cleaned out a house, or want to understand what old coins, jewelry, or silver items are actually worth.
A Coin Shop Is Not Just for Coins
At Oakton Coins & Collectibles, people bring in much more than coins. We regularly evaluate U.S. coins, world coins, paper money, gold, silver, gold bullion, silver bullion, broken gold jewelry, sterling silver flatware, pocket watches, estate jewelry, historical documents, and other collectibles.
That is why many people are surprised to learn that a coin shop can be a useful place to visit even if coins are only part of what they have.
Why People Visit a Coin Shop
Many customers come to us after inheriting a coin collection, handling an estate, cleaning out a safe deposit box, or finding old valuables at home.
Sometimes the items are neatly organized. Other times everything is mixed together in envelopes, jars, boxes, folders, jewelry bags, and old bank wrappers. That is normal. You do not need to know what everything is before bringing it in.

What Makes a Coin Shop Different?
A coin shop looks at value differently than a bank, pawn shop, or general gold buyer.
A bank usually sees face value. A pawn shop may see a quick resale item. A gold buyer may focus mainly on metal weight. A coin dealer looks at the whole picture: metal content, collector value, condition, rarity, market demand, and whether the item belongs with a larger collection.
For example, a silver dollar may only say one dollar on the coin, but that does not mean it is only worth one dollar. A gold coin may have a face value of $20 but be worth far more because of its gold content and collector demand.

A Place for Inherited Collections
One of the most common reasons people visit Oakton Coins is because they inherited coins, jewelry, silver, bullion, paper money, or other estate items and are not sure what to do next.
In those situations, it can be helpful to work with one buyer who can evaluate multiple categories in one visit instead of taking coins to one place, jewelry to another place, silverware somewhere else, and paper money somewhere else.

Do You Need to Be a Collector?
No. Most people who visit us are not coin experts. Many have never been inside a coin shop before.
Our job is to help identify what you have, explain what matters, and separate common items from items with real value. Sometimes the answer is simple. Sometimes a collection needs more careful review. Either way, you do not need to research everything before coming in.
