Selling an Inherited Coin Collection
Many people who visit our Skokie shop are not collectors. They inherited coins from a parent, grandparent or other relative and need help separating valuable material from ordinary coins.
An inherited collection may contain rare coins, common silver coins, foreign money, mint sets, bullion, jewelry and items with little commercial value. We examine the different categories separately instead of assuming everything should be priced the same way.

Different items require different methods of evaluation. A rare coin cannot be priced using only its weight, and a piece of gold jewelry cannot be priced accurately without determining its purity.
Collectible coins are evaluated according to date, mint mark, condition, authenticity, rarity, certification and current market demand. Bullion is priced according to the live precious-metals market, the product, quantity and current wholesale demand.
Gold, silver, platinum and palladium items may be examined using visual inspection, accurate weighing, magnets, acid testing and X-ray fluorescence analysis. Oakton Coins has two professional bench XRF analyzers, allowing us to test metal composition in the shop rather than relying solely on a stamped karat mark.
You can review current gold and silver spot prices, but spot is a reference price rather than a guaranteed cash price for every finished item.

Ordinary verbal evaluations are free, and there is no obligation to sell. We can explain what the items are and provide a purchase offer based on current market conditions.
Written appraisals are also available by request for estates, trusts, insurance, charitable donations and other formal purposes. A written appraisal may involve a fee depending on the size of the collection, the purpose of the report and the amount of research required.
